Metadata Testing – University of Glasgow

Here at the University of Glasgow we have been doing some initial testing.  We have set up a test manifestation of an ePrints installation to help us analyse requirements for storage of metadata relating to datasets produced by University staff.

We have been looking at the 30 metadata fields proposed for marine data as part of C4D. 

We have also been considering the minimum generic University of Glasgow metadata requirements for datasets.

Over the next few weeks we will be entering some more data about ‘real’ datasets and noting down questions that arise.

We plan to work through each field on the C4D specification, as well as any additional fields suggested by project partners, to clarify what each field is and to define what is essential for the University of Glasgow.

 

Mapping dataset metadata to CERIF

A mapping exercise has been conducted as a first step to CERIFying datasets. This maps to elements from the marine metadata standard from MEDIN.

This mapping adheres to the 3-layer metadata model (discovery, contextual and detailed metadata) as advocated by euroCRIS, and one objective of this mapping is to distinguish the contextual metadata from the subject-specific, detailed metadata. The overall aim is to obtain a generic set of metadata for datasets that can be implemented in research information systems via CERIF.
